Xtensible works alongside our customers to implement enterprise information management strategies based on a progressive maturity model - the Intelligent Utility Information Management Maturity Model. An “intelligent utility” is one that has a complete understanding of the information flowing through the systems that support its business and the capability to leverage this information. Companies using our maturity model have a clear path from today’s tactical data management through information management as they evolve toward an intelligent enterprise.
Intelligent Utility Information Management Maturity Model
The maturity of a company’s information management strategy can be characterized at each step of the maturity model.
Data Management: The enterprise has the capability to integrate systems and allow access to data from numerous applications, but information remains confined (”siloed”) within business units or proprietary solutions. There is not an enterprise view of information and very little semantic consistency or correlation. Characteristics of a data management focused enterprise typically include:
- Point-to-point system integration
- Application driven data marts and business intelligence
- Duplicate and overlapping data, information, and infrastructure
Information Management: The enterprise has the capability to manage both data and information (the meaning of data) with common governance and infrastructure for consistent and accurate information to support responsive enterprise operations. Characteristics of an information management focused enterprise typically include:
- A documented enterprise strategy for information management and governance
- A focus on enterprise semantics and metadata management
- A plan for uniform integration and information management platforms
- The capability to use accurate data and information when and where the enterprise needs it
Intelligent Enterprise: The enterprise has evolved to information management into a capability to leverage business intelligence, both real time and non-real time, integrated with operational information. In the case of electric utilities this translates to an enterprise supporting Smart Grid and Intelligent Utility operations. Characteristics of an intelligent enterprise typically include:
- The capability to derive intelligence from many data and information sources to support operational optimization
- The capability to quickly adapt to new business, operational, and regulatory requirements
Xtensible’s typical customer is feeling the pain and cost of managing his or her business with a focus on data management. By leveraging our Intelligent Utility Information Management Maturity Model and supporting methodologies, tools, information standards, and implementation technologies, companies are able to establish an Enterprise Information Management (EIM) strategy that provides immediate benefit while building a foundation for business evolution that makes practical use of the exponential growth in enterprise data.
